Mystery Men

There are three significant unexplained appearances by men (or so we assume) in black, or at least dark clothing, over the two-season run of Twin Peaks, and we’re pretty sure none of them have anything to do with Johnny Cash or Walter O’Dim:

Appearance One: In episode two, Bobby Briggs and Mike Nelson head into the Twin Peaks woods in pitch blackness to pick up a stash of coke from Leo Johnson. The mood is tense: Bobby and Mike are shy $10,000, and a shotgun-toting Leo—no sweetheart to begin with—is especially grumpy because he’s convinced his wife, Shelly, is fooling around with some guy, which she is (with Bobby), though Leo doesn’t appear to know that part yet. Bobby spots a figure off in the distance, hiding behind a tree, scaring the bejesus out of him. “Who’s that?” he asks. “Is there someone with you?” Leo dismisses the question with a hostile (Leo default mode) “Never mind,” not even bothering to turn around and look, perhaps suspecting Bobby is trying to distract him. The script, by Mark Frost and David Lynch, makes no mention of this mysterious figure, but no surprise there, as the episode was helmed by Lynch, who was always revising on set. This man in black is never identified; we’ve always suspected it was Leland/Bob, keeping an eye on Leo, whom he had seen at Jacques Renault’s cabin while stalking Laura the night of her murder, though of course none of this would be known to viewers when the series first aired, since the details of Laura’s murder had yet to be revealed as of this episode’s airing. At the 2015 Twin Peaks Festival, it was reported that this man in black was actually a production crew member who was standing in for Ray Wise, the actor who portrayed Leland. Bingo!

Appearance Two: An easy one: In the season-one finale (“The Last Evening”), Donna, Maddy, and James play a particularly cruel trick on Dr. Jacoby, conspiring to lure him from his office by trying to pass Maddy (in a blonde wig) off as her dead cousin Laura, so that they can search for an audiotape tape that Laura recorded for the mad doctor and that they believe will help them crack the case. This nasty little scheme works, and Jacoby agrees to meet Laura/Maddy at the town gazebo; while gazing at her from afar in disbelief, Jacoby is smacked over the head from behind and beaten by a ski-masked man in black. Though the fiend is never explicitly identified, the fairly obvious answer is Leland/Bob, for two reasons: One, as Maddy slips out of the Palmer house to rendezvous with the dynamic duo, she’s unknowingly spotted by Leland, who’s sitting alone in the dark in the living room with that creepy look on his face, suggesting Bob too is watching (though this is not apparent at the time either, since viewers had yet to discover Bob’s possession of Leland), and that he had followed Maddy to the gazebo.
